Team Targeting: Baseball Trading Pins

trading pins fans of baseball

Everyone has their favorite baseball team - start collecting YOUR teams pins today!

Honestly, it really does not matter which team you collect baseball trading pins for. The reality is that most people have their favorite teams that they root for week in and week out throughout the season. In most cases, collectors who have been into the hobby of collecting baseball trading pins typically go with whichever team they like the most. There is not too many benefits to selecting one team over another and here is why.

#1: Each team has rare and valuable baseball trading pins

Obviously older teams probably have more baseball trading pins than newer teams that have not been in Major League Baseball for very long. However, you would be surprised to find out that there are lots of baseball trading pins out on the marketplace for each team. Some baseball trading pins are limited to a certain amount and perhaps only given to certain season ticket holders or at certain events. The benefit to that is that it automatically makes them worth more.

#2: People enjoy collecting based on what they are a fan of

I’m not particularly an Orioles fan. However, I have been able to pick up a few Orioles trading pins because I lived in Baltimore. It was easier access because local collectors often enjoyed them and sometimes I would simply find a good deal. Perhaps I had a rare Orioles baseball pin, they would trade me their awesome Yankee’s pin and I would give them the Orioles pin. Overall, it has worked out well for me. Sometimes to the area your in and if you are a fan of a different team outside of the region you live in will be beneficial to you. However, with the invention of the internet things are much easier to access and get rid of. It is far easier to build your collection now than it was ten years ago!

Baseball Trading Pins – What do the Collectors Do?

If you are thinking about getting into baseball trading pins hobby, you may already be aware of how most collectors do things. However, if not, perhaps this will give you a good idea of how to go about getting into the hobby and getting the highly sought after baseball trading pins that you would like to get your hands on as well! I think you will be very surprised at how easy it is to get into the hobby of collecting baseball trading pins.

If you are anything like me, you probably have your favorite team that plays baseball. The good news is that you can find baseball trading pins for nearly any baseball team in existence that plays at a relatively high level. The vast majority of collectors do not take their time to try and collect every single baseball trading pin that they can find. They are typically moving towards a baseball trading pin collection that has primarily one, maybe two teams in it. This is not to say that they never have their hands on other baseball trading pins. For example, when I was collecting baseball cards, I always tried to get Frank Thomas’ cards. However, I would sometimes pick up other players cards in an effort to make a good trade later on down the line for a good Frank Thomas card.

The same rules apply to baseball trading pins. Sometimes if you live in the New York area but you are a Boston Red Sox fan, it would probably be easier to get your hands on high quality Yankee’s baseball trading pins than it would be Boston Red Sox baseball trading pins. For that reason, you might pick up local Yankee’s baseball trading pins and then go online to make good trades for high quality baseball trading pins for the team you are looking to build a collection around.

Things to Look For in Baseball Trading Pins

baseball trading pin rowsOver the last few years I have got into a new hobby. You see, baseball has always been one of my favorite sports. I remember sitting back and watching the New York Yankees play. I would always get so excited when I went to the store to pick up some baseball cards and it had any Yankee player in them. It did not actually matter whether the player was any good or not. If they had a Yankee’s jersey on, it was valuable to me! However, things have changed a little bit now. While I still support the Yankee’s I’m now out there trying to find baseball trading pins. Some of my prized possessions in my collection are, of course, Yankee’s baseball trading pins, but I collect all teams now. If you are thinking about getting into the hobby though there are two things you should look for before making any purchases.

#1: Find a Reputable Person to Trade With or Buy From

Unfortunately just like anything else you get involved in, people are out there attempting to overcharge for their “prized” collection. Baseball trading pins are no exception when it comes to this type of dealing. What you should look to do is trade with people who are reputable in the community. It isn’t very hard to find the difference between someone who knows their stuff versus people who just want to make a dollar. You’ll be better off finding someone that enjoys the hobby versus a collector who is only in it for the money.

#2: The More Unique – The Better

What makes baseball cards that are old so valuable is not their age so much. That has something to do with it, particularly if they are in good condition, but it is their uniqueness that makes the biggest difference. The same goes for baseball trading pins. You simply should be looking for the most unique trading pin possible. Some baseball trading pins only had a small number created in 2010. If you can get your hands on one of those versus one that was in production and had 10,000 sold in the early 2000’s, you’ll be better off with the later one that was a limited number.

Ice Cream Guy Jim Has Tons of Trading Pins

Take a look at Jim’s display of baseball trading pins in this video. This has given me some inspiration to source some frames to show off my collection. As a fellow little league umpire, I certainly understand his addiction and pride with regards to trading pins.

Now the only obstacle is to find some wall space that my wife won’t balk at – hey I just made a joke…get it? Balk…tell me I’m not a little league baseball fanatic.

Baseball Trading Pins in History

The history of trading sports pins seems to have had its start at the Olympics. Collectors would assemble in hopes of buying, selling, or trading pins. Whereas baseball pins are concerned, the practice of buying, selling, or trading seems to have gotten its start during the 1911 World Series. Around that time, they were called press pins as they were given out to members of the press in order for them to gain access to the press boxes. Baseball trading pins started out much heavier than what they show up as today, but do come in all shapes and sizes.

Today, baseball trading pins still have a place in the hearts of buyers, sellers, and traders. But, they also have a place for those seeking custom designs for their teams. Little League teams can have their team names emblazoned on their pin with choice of color and design. With artwork being so advanced, the baseball pin of your dreams is only an imagination away. Baseball pins can be an expression of team spirit as well as a sense of achievement for being a part of that team.

As far as trading pins goes, baseball trading pins have become the new wave of hobbies. There are several websites dedicated to the trading of baseball pins with information about trade shows and discussions about trading in general. With access to the internet and websites such as these, baseball pin trading can be a source of fun, an opportunity to meet other traders, and a feeling of accomplishment for having made the trade for that much coveted pin.

Baseball pins can be used for trading, wearing, or better yet for a keepsake memory of a time in a child’s life he will always cherish. A baseball trading pin may even be passed on to a grandchild as a good luck charm when its their turn to be part of either a baseball team or a other sports team.

Scout Trading Pins

boy scout trading pinsDid you know that Disney made trading pins with a theme focused on the Boy Scouts of America? These trading pins were just discovered by my wife while reading another blog. It comes as no surprise that we didn’t know about this theme because we just started collecting and trading this type of pin, but I think it’s pretty interesting. I am searching for any information out there on Girl Scout trading pins, but haven’t found any yet. If you have any knowledge of them, please let me know by way of email.

Trading Pin Towels

trading pins towelsYou’ve probably seen these trading pin towels at the tournaments and wondered where you might find them. Well, we bought ours from an online vendor and they were able to put our team logo on each one. The parents from each team in our league joined in as well. They also offer custom bags to store your trading pins come season’s end.

My kids hand their towels on the backside of their bedroom door – mom won’t allow them anywhere else. There is already way too much trading pin activity going on in the house.

Be Careful With Those Trading Pins

As fun as trading pins are at tournaments, we must remember that each pin has one or more fairly sharp prongs on the backside that can cause some damage if not handled properly. Make sure your cover is on the pins when handling them or carrying them in your pocket.

Why? Well, let’s just say that one of the neighbor kid’s parents had one in their back pocket last week and then got into his car – you can imagine what happened next. The cover was not on the backside of the baseball pin and an unpleasant surprise then reared its ugly head. ;-)

Maybe Jerry will comment here on the blog with a play-by-play, but we just wanted to pass it along.
